Resnik Awarded Bloomberg Data Science Research Grant

Philip Resnik, a professor of linguistics with an appointment in UMIACS, was recently awarded a Bloomberg Data Science Research Grant for a collaborative project that seeks to uncover patterns of perspective in news stories.

“What’s The Angle? Disentangling Perspectives from Content in the News,” develops computational models that use linguistic signals found in text to uncover patterns of perspective in news sources, disentangling perspective from content.

The project explores how news coverage does not just involve the topic or issue being covered; perspectives are also woven into the language used to discuss an issue.

“This is an opportunity to build on great collaborations with some of the best computational and social scientists anywhere,” Resnik says. “It’s also a chance to look at core issues of framing and perspective in the news at a time when our national politics makes those questions more important than ever.”

Resnik is working with researchers from the University of California, Davis; University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and University of Washington on the project.

Their project was one of eight selected from hundreds of applications from faculty at universities around the world.

The Bloomberg Data Science Research Grant Program supports cutting-edge research in the field of machine learning, including specific areas such as natural language processing, information retrieval, machine translation and deep neural networks.
