Cummings Co-Authors Paper on Grid Computing for Computational Biology

Michael Cummings, an associate professor of biology with an appointment in UMIACS, recently published a paper in Systematic Biology that highlights his efforts to build the MolecularEvolution.org website.

Launched in 2010 by researchers at the University of Maryland and the University of Arizona, the site uses grid computing—where people worldwide can donate their personal computing resources—for research in computational biology. To date, more than 38,000 people have allowed their computers to be used for the project.

More than 17,000 researchers from 146 countries have run analyses using the grid network, studying topics ranging from simulating pandemic flu risk to tracing the lineage of ancient moth species.
