Colwell Honored with Prize Medal
Rita Colwell, a Distinguished University Professor of cell biology and molecular genetics with an appointment in UMIACS, was recognized in April with the Prize Medal from the Society for General Microbiology.
The annual award is presented to an outstanding microbiologist considered is a global leader in their field and whose work has far-reaching impact beyond microbiology.
The Society for General Microbiology is an organization for scientists who work in all areas of microbiology. It is the largest learned microbiological society in Europe with a worldwide membership based in universities, industry, hospitals, research institutes and schools.
Colwell is renowned for her research on global infectious diseases related to water and public health. She is currently developing an international network to address emerging infectious diseases and water issues, including safe drinking water, for both the developed and developing world.
