Larry Davis's mentee behind Merecedes-Benz's 'Intelligent Drive' system

Dariu M. Gavrila, one of Dr. Larry Davis's former CS PhD students, and his team's stereo vision-based pedestrian system has been incorporated in the Mercedes-Benz 2013 E-class and S-class models.

Called 'Intelligent Drive', the pedestrian safety system includes fully automatic emergency braking and works during both day and night. Evaluations of accident data by Mercedes-Benz indicate that this new technology could avoid 6% of pedestrian accidents and reduce the severity of a further 41%.
