Leafsnap named as one of Scientific American's top 10 apps for smart phones and tablets

Leafsnap is a free electronic field guide developed by researchers from the University of Maryland, Columbia University and the Smithsonian Institution. This mobile app uses visual-recognition software to help identify tree species from photographs of their leaves. Leafsnap currently includes the trees of the Northeast and will soon grow to cover the trees of the entire continental United States.

Leafsnap is a result of the collaborative efforts of Dr. David Jacobs of UMIACS, Dr. Peter N. Belhumeur of Columbia University and Dr. John Kress, Research Botanist & Curator at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.
