UMIACS Faculty Part of $68M ARL Cooperative Agreement

Six faculty members in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) are part of a just-announced cooperative agreement between the U.S. Army Research Laboratory(ARL), the University of Maryland and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

The five-year agreement, worth up to $68 million, is expected to drive transformational advances in artificial intelligence and autonomy.

Ramani Duraiswami, Ming Lin, Dinesh Manocha, Adam Porter, Abhinav Shrivastava and Pratap Tokekar will join more than two-dozen other researchers on the project.

They will bring to bear their scientific expertise and thought leadership on tasks that involve engineering, robotics, computer science, operations research, modeling and simulation, and cybersecurity.

The overarching goal is to accelerate the development and deployment of safe, effective and resilient capabilities and technologies—from wearable devices to unmanned aircraft—that work intelligently and in cooperation with each other and with human actors across multiple environments.

Manocha, a Distinguished University Professor of computer science with appointments in UMIACS and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is one of the core-principal investigators on the project.
