Pop, Corrada Bravo Published in Nature Methods

Mihai Pop and Hector Corrada Bravo, both in UMIACS and the Center for Health-related Informatics and Bioimaging, were recently featured in Nature Methods for their research involving microbiome association analysis.

The two computer scientists along with fourth-year doctoral student Joseph Paulson worked closely with Colin Stine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine to develop a new statistical approach for microbiome association studies.

The research addresses several challenges specific to metagenomic data, including the high level of sparsity in case/control studies due to insufficient sequence coverage. Making this distinction is essential for ensuring the accuracy and power of the statistical analysis of the data.
