Davis Receives USM Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence
Larry Davis, a Distinguished University Professor of computer science with an appointment in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS), has received a University System of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Research/Scholarship/Creative Activities.
The award is the highest faculty honor presented by the USM Board of Regents. It is given each year to a select group of exemplary educators within the University System of Maryland.
Davis and other award recipients will be formally recognized at a special ceremony on April 19 in Baltimore.
Davis’s research focuses on object/action recognition and scene analysis, event and modeling recognition, image and video databases, tracking, human movement modeling, 3-D human motion capture, and camera networks.
He is also an academic adviser and mentor to numerous graduate students and postdocs working in UMIACS.
“For the past several decades, the University of Maryland has been recognized as a ‘go-to’ institution for up-and-coming scientists interested in expanding their knowledge-base in the field of computer vision,” says Mihai Pop, professor of computer science and director of UMIACS. “This is due in no small part to the academic expertise and leadership abilities of Larry Davis.”
Davis served as chair of the Department of Computer Science from 1999 to 2012, and as founding director of UMIACS from 1985 to 1994. He is current director of the Center for Automation Research, one of seven major centers in UMIACS.
Notable external awards include being named an International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) Fellow; Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Fellow; and IEEE Fellow.
Davis received his doctorate in computer science from the University of Maryland in 1976.
