Colwell Honored with Prize Medal from Society for General Microbiology
Rita Colwell, a Distinguished University Professor of cell biology and molecular genetics with an appointment in UMIACS, will be recognized with a Prize Medal from the Society for General Microbiology at its annual conference next week in Liverpool, U.K.
The award is presented to an outstanding microbiologist who is a global leader in their field and whose work has had a far-reaching impact beyond microbiology.
Colwell is widely recognized for her groundbreaking research on global infectious diseases related to water and public health. She is currently developing an international network to address emerging infectious diseases and water issues, including safe drinking water for both the developed and developing world.
The Society for General Microbiology is an organization for scientists who work in all areas of microbiology. It is the largest learned microbiological society in Europe with a worldwide membership based in universities, industry, hospitals, research institutes and schools.
