Amitabh Varshney, Satyandra Gupta and their students win Best Paper Award at the Chicago ASME CIE conference

A paper by Dr. Amitabh Varshney (UMIACS) and his student, Sujal Bista, in collaboration with Dr. Satyandra Gupta (ME and ISR) and his student, Sagar Chowdhury, won the Best Paper Award at the ASME Computer and Information in Engineering Conference held during August 12-15, in Chicago.

Their paper “Using GPUs for Real-time Prediction of Optical Forces on Microsphere Ensembles” presents a many-core algorithm to simulate movement of micron-sized particles using lasers. This has applications which range from automated nano-assembly to biological cell manipulation.
